The Devil Came On Horseback

THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK

exposes the tragedy taking place in Darfur as seen through the eyes of an American witness who has since returned to the US to take action to stop it.

Using the exclusive photographs and first hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle, THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK takes the viewer on an emotionally charged journey into the heart of Darfur, Sudan, where an Arab run government is systematically executing a plan to rid the province of it’s black African citizens. As an official military observer, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. He was unprepared for what he would witness and experience, including being fired upon, taken hostage, and being unable to intervene to save the lives of young children. Ultimately frustrated by the inaction of the international community, Steidle resigned and returned to the US to expose the images and stories of lives systematically destroyed.

An INTERNATIONAL FILM CIRCUIT release of a BREAK THRU FILMS production in association with GLOBAL GRASSROOTS & THREE GENERATIONS.

Abstract
When director Wisit Sasanatieng's retro cowboy flick Fa thalai jone (2000) became the first Thai film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2001, under the English-language title Tears of the Black Tiger, Thai cinema seemed to have truly 'gone international'. This paper examines the striking disparity, however, in the reception of the film by local and global audiences, to the extent that Fa thalai jone and Tears of the Black Tiger might arguably be understood as two discrete and divergent cinematic texts at the level of viewer signification. For Western critics, 'Tears…' is unquestionably a piece of postmodern filmmaking, awash with surface aesthetic appeal, intertextual richness and an apparently unrelenting obsession with style that is seemingly devoid of an original reference point. Fa thalai jone, by contrast connotes distinct meanings for Thai audiences, who are more fully attuned to the original references the film pursues and able to read the aesthetic appeal it has to offer in a framework beyond that of the dominant 'force field' of interpretation that postmodernism has come to be in the West. Instead Fa thalai jone offers a homage to Thailand's cinematic past, posing as a 'genuine Thai film' (phaphayon thai thae) and comprehended in terms of an alternative dominant force field of meaning, that of traditionalism and reverence for the past. This paper examines the ways in which Tears of the Black Tiger/Fa thalai jone straddles two alternative interpretive positions in an accomplished move on the part of the director to pursue the globally focused aspirations of modern Thai cinema while remaining idiosyncratically faithful to local sensibilities.

tattoo

Archaeologists discovered this tattoo-ed mummy with semi-precious gemstone and gold jewelry from the pre-Columbian Moche civilization in Peru.

Accompanied by unusual burial items, such as weapons of war and the skeleton of a child with a noose around its neck, the mummy, a woman approximately 30 years old when she died, was discovered last year by a group of Peruvian and U.S. archaeologists at the ancient site of El Brujo (The Wizard) on the coast of northern Peru, near Trujillo.

Her body was wrapped in hundreds of meters (yards) of cotton cloth, and near where it was found lay the skeleton of a youth offered in sacrifice with a rope still around its neck.
Jewelry made of semi-precious gemstones and fine gold was also found at the site, as were other objects like gold sewing needles and raw cotton.

The archaeologists were surprised to find buried with the mummy two ceremonial war clubs and 23 spear throwing implements, normally found only in the graves of Moche men.
"Perhaps she was a female warrior, or maybe the war clubs and spear throwers were symbols of power that were funeral gifts from men," said John Verano, a physical anthropologist from Tulane University in the United States.

In Samoa, tattoos denote rank. When you are consecrated a chief you go through a very painful process wherewith you are endowed with a specific tattoo which extends from knee-caps to rib cage.

Were these beasts simply imaginary? Or were their origins to be found deeper in the human psyche? Were they ?imaginal? ? did they arise unbidden from some subtle realm from which we derive our humanity? To an ancient, the skin might have been perceived as the boundary between ?inner and outer? ? between that which he did and didn?t understand. Our ancestors may have deployed these fantastical creatures to patrol this vulnerable membrane, this liminal zone between worlds.

?Their adornment of the human skin thus serves to draw attention to ? and to reinforce the central significance of ? this boundary between the chaos beyond, transgressed by the tattooing but thereafter protected by the powerful and dangerous entities.?

Synopsis
Taiwanese filmmaker makes a film based on the myth of Salome at the Louvre. Even though he speaks neither French nor English, he insists on giving the part of King Herod to the French actor Antoine. To give the film a chance at the box-office, the production company gives the role of Salomé to a world famous model. But problems arise as soon as filming begins…
Amidst all this confusion, the director suddenly learns of his mother’s death. The producer flies to Taipei, to attend the funeral. The director falls into a deep sleep where his mother’s spirit does not seem to want to leave her old apartment. The producer has no choice but to wait, alone and lost in a strange city.
As after a very long voyage, filming will resume with all who were lost in the underground of the Louvre.

Oh My God In theaters: November 13, 2009

Genre:Documentary
Director:Peter Rodger
Cast:David Copperfield, Hugh Jackman, Sir Bob Geldof, Ringo Starr, Jack Thompson, Seal

In every corner of the world, there’s one question that can never be definitively answered, yet stirs up equal parts passion, curiosity, self-reflection and often wild imagination: “What is God?” Filmmaker Peter Rodger explores this profound, age-old query in the provocative non-fiction feature “Oh My God.” This visual odyssey travels the globe with a revealing lens examining the idea of God through the minds and eyes of various religions and cultures, everyday people, spiritual leaders and celebrities.

His goal: to give the viewer the personal, visceral experience of some kind of reasonable, meaningful definition of one of the most used—some might say overused—words in most every language. Rodger’s quest takes him from the United States to Africa, from the Middle East to the Far East, where such fundamental issues as: “Did God create man or did man create God?, “Is there one God for all religions?” and “If God exists, why does he allow so much suffering?” are explored in candid discussions with the various Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and even atheists the filmmaker meets along the way. But maybe it’s former Beatle Ringo Starr who sums it up best here when he simply says, “God is love.” Rodger would like viewers to come away with a feeling of having an amazing
journey - seeing places they would never see normally, hearing music that inspires and words that educate, bringing understanding and tolerance of other individuals that in turn richens their own existence. “Oh My God” stars Hugh Jackman, Seal, Ringo Starr, Sir Bob Geldof, Princess Michael of Kent, David Copperfield and Jack Thompson.

We are experiencing days of religious turmoil, of fundamentalism and the breakdown of spirituality through technology and reason. After the collapse of the piety that was rooted in myth, cult, occult, and ancient religions, Peter Rodger asks,"What is God?"

Over three years the director travelled across 23 countries asking this question to children, religious leaders, celebrities, fanatics, and to the common man. The results of this journey are sometimes predictable, sometimes surprising. We are conditioned as human beings - influenced by our parents, schools, and the religious beliefs of our home countries. If we have a religion, perhaps we should spend longer studying our chosen belief instead of blindly following other human beings who claim to have the authority of God. It seems evident that Man has taken the power and concept of God and politicized it for agendas that are the antipathies to the dignity and tolerance that the prophets of all the major religions preached in their day. JI

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Simon Keys, Director of Saint Ethelburga's Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, Fuad Nahdi, Director of the Radical Middle Way and Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain MBE, Minister of Maidenhead Synagogue, writer and broadcaster.

I was frustrated with the childish schoolyard mentality that permeates this world - I call it the "My God Is Greater Than Your God" syndrome - where you have grown men flying airplanes into buildings shouting "God is Great" - where you have the leader of the free world telling the BBC in 2003 that he invaded Iraq because God told him to - where you have the constitution of a country (Iran) that dictates that its supreme leader is God's representative on earth - where you have young men and women blowing themselves up (and innocent others) to buy a place into heaven. None of these concepts made any sense to me. Does it matter what I believe? Does it matter what you believe? And what is this entity that goes by the name of God, that seems to bring about so much friction, hurt and pain? So I decided to go around the world and ask people what they think.

Over a three-year period I traveled across 23 countries asking children, religious leaders, celebrities, fanatics and the common Man what God means to them. Along the way I experienced an incredible array of faith expressions and had no small number of unforgettable adventures.
The film is a result of this journey. It is not about religion per se; it is about what God means to people throughout our human family. I needed to explore and discover for myself whether religion and religious people were the cause of all the world’s woes. And, as a person who wrestles with faith, I needed to determine whether God created man or man created God.
